Shee-nanigans: A Nickname Saga

Daily writing prompt
What’s the story behind your nickname?

My name is Lilybeth—yes, it sounds like a delicate flower just beginning to bloom in a sun-drenched meadow. But for reasons I still can’t explain, the kids in the early 2000s decided that “Sheilah” suited me better. Why? No idea. There was no logic, no deep meaning—just playground democracy in action.

I went with it. And honestly, Sheilah had a bit of flair. It sounded like a girl who could dance to Shakira with her waist doing all the talking—rhythmic, confident, and probably the main character in every school disco.

Then came the mid-2000s. I hit my teenage years, and my friends—clearly sensing the need for reinvention—trimmed it down to “Shee” (that’s “She” with an extra ‘e’ for flair, sass, or possibly just teen drama). And just like that, Shee stuck.

Now here I am, a grown adult, with a name that sounds like I either belong in a rap battle or a group chat full of emojis. But honestly, it’s easier to go with it than to explain the origin story every time.

I’m not Lilybeth anymore. I mean, technically I am. But in reality? Lilybeth is a soft, romantic dreamer. Shee? She’s the girl with hips that don’t lie. And somewhere in between all that, there’s just me—a soft girl at heart who really just wants to be loved… preferably by a man who can call me Lily.
